Car insurance: Credit crunch 'is no excuse for driving uninsured'
Tuesday, 07 October 2008
The fact one in 20 motorists does not have car insurance cannot be put down to the current economic climate, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
A spokesperson for the group said: "The fact of the matter is that before the credit crunch even seeped into English language, there were plenty of uninsured drivers."
He added no excuse was acceptable as getting behind the wheel without the necessary cover put other road users lives at risk.
There is the perception among uninsured drivers they will get away with it and, even if they do get caught, the penalties are not that severe, he stated.
However, a number of recent initiatives are making things more difficult for those people who choose to break the law, the spokesperson warned.
The ABI represents the interests of insurance providers in the UK and describes itself as a supporter of high standards of customer service in the industry.
