Travel insurance: Cruising for a bruising with no insurance
Thursday, 16 November 2006
Cruise passengers on board luxury ships need to be just as vigilant about which travel insurance policy they take out as regular holiday makers.
Europ Assistance, who specialise in cruise travel, has urged passengers to make sure that they are adequately covered by cheap travel insurance because illness can strike anywhere.
Adrian Lawrence, operations manager at Europ Assistance, said: "Most people are surprised to learn that the cost of any treatment onboard is not included in the cost of their cruise.
"Customers must ensure they take out adequate travel insurance, that specifically covers cruising. Such cover is usually available for an additional premium, which would include treatment whilst onboard a cruise liner, otherwise they could end up carrying the cost themselves."
More than 700 passengers on board the Carnival Cruise Lines' Liberty ship have fallen ill this week while sailing from Rome to Florida. The cause of the outbreak is said to be a norovirus.
