Car insurance: 'Beware of cut 'n' shuts'

Monday, 06 April 2009

A car insurance claim could be the least of a driver's problems if they rush into buying a used motor, it has been suggested.

Vehicle information company HPI claimed prices for second-hand models have fallen dramatically as a result of the economic downturn, but this does not mean people who spot a bargain should be in a rush to snap it up.

The group pointed out if motorists do not do their research, they could end up with a dangerous cut 'n' shut on their hands.

It explained these cars can be deadly because they involve two different vehicles being welded together, so the structural integrity of the auto is compromised.

HPI director Nick Lindsay said: "Whilst people can be taken in by shiny paintwork and a low ticket price, it is important to remain aware of the possible dangers."

Meanwhile, used car buyers who do their research and uncover a genuine bargain may find third party motor insurance may be more cost-effective than comprehensive cover.
