Car insurance: Frosty warning issued to motorists

Tuesday, 05 January 2010

Motorists who leave their motors running unattended while waiting for the windows to defrost could be left without valid car insurance cover if it is stolen.

With icy conditions covering the country and further snowfalls predicted for the coming days, it is often tempting to leave a car running to defrost. However, police are strongly warning people against leaving their car keys in the ignition.

PC Mark Humphries of Devon and Cornwall Constabulary noted that it was a nationally recognised problem, with vehicles being stolen from driveways with keys still in the ignition.

"Unfortunately, if a vehicle is stolen in this manner, people will also get a frosty reception from their car insurance company, as loss from leaving keys in an unattended vehicle leaves policies void," he added.

The Met Office today (December 5th) issued severe weather warnings for many parts of the UK, with widespread icy roads and heavy snow affecting most of the country.
