Motor Insurance: Sussex speeders to be snapped by digital cameras

Tuesday, 10 June 2008

Fast drivers in Sussex could be caught out by a new digital camera trial monitoring road speeds around the clock, in news which could affect car insurance premiums.

As well as operating 24/7, the cameras differ from the 100 already dotted around the county in that they do not flash and store images on a memory card instead of film, reports the Bexhill Observer.

The prototype devices are expected to be put forward for Home Office approval later this year subject to results in Sussex and another English test site.

If successful, traditional film cameras could be phased out altogether in favour of the digital technology.

Emma Rogers, communications manager for the Sussex Safer Road Partnership (SSRP), told the newspaper: "It makes sense to make the change when firms like Kodak are talking about stopping making film."

Campaigners have dismissed the new non-flashing devices as a moneymaking exercise to catch motorists out rather than improve safety, according to the Daily Express.
