Car insurance: UK "a nation of distracted drivers"

Wednesday, 25 March 2009

British drivers are too easily distracted and could see the cost of their car insurance increase if they are caught being careless, according to Moneysupermarket.com.

Research by the price comparison website found motorists have a variety of bad habits that could be putting them and other road users in danger.

Some 77 per cent of those questioned admitted changing radio stations or CDs while behind the wheel, while 52 per cent said they sometimes eat while driving.

Moneysupermarket.com warned anyone convicted of being careless while in charge of a vehicle could lose access to low cost motor insurance.

It stated this kind of blemish on a person's record generally leads to cover going up by 26 per cent or £116 a year.

Managing director of insurance Andy Leadbetter said: "It seems we are a nation of distracted drivers - yet being on the road requires complete concentration at all times."

Previous research by Moneysupermarket.com revealed 19 per cent of motorists in the UK have driven without vehicle insurance.
