As we approach the festive season, families have to keep a close eye on their budgets, and one great way to do this is for them to make their own Christmas decorations, as opposed to going out and buying them.

Country Living has a variety of great, low-cost ideas, which can help to make homes more festive as we come up to the big day.

Suggestions could include selecting some pinecones up from outside, spray painting them white and hanging them from the Christmas tree.

Real Simple recommends that home insurance policyholders develop an advent countdown to Christmas using recycled, painted tin cans with numbers on them.

These can then be filled with gifts for the whole family to use and enjoy on each day.

As well as this, those who have some spare mittens lying around can use them as stockings for tiny treats to hang above the fireplace, according to Good Housekeeping.

These can then be stitched on a ribbon to ensure they look even more impressive.

The website also recommended people use walnuts, cranberries and kumquats inside a vase.
