Car insurance: 'Downsizing will be key trend in 2009'

Monday, 23 February 2009

Motorists who downsize in order to save money on car insurance may also cut costs in other areas, it has been suggested.

According to Which Car?, people trading in larger vehicles for small, more fuel-efficient models will be a key trend in 2009.

It pointed out 4x4s have fallen out of vogue in recent times.

The consumer magazine claimed such cars are becoming increasingly socially unacceptable for everyone except farmers.

It suggested a large family considering buying a Land Rover Discovery could make significant savings by opting for a Honda FR-V.

As well as shelling out some £20,000 less in the first place, the magazine explained buyers would also reduce the amount they spend at the pump.

Editor Richard Headland said: "Times are hard, so it's no surprise that people are downsizing to save money."

He added: "Luxury cars and 4x4s could be in for a rough ride."

Motorists who opt for smaller vehicles may find they qualify for low cost motor insurance.
