If you drink, just don't drive

Britain's road users have been given a simple message as the Christmas period comes ever closer and office parties become the order of the day, if you are drinking, just do not drive.

Road charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists has become the latest advocate of anti drink-driving crackdowns, after Brake last week backed the police measures to ensure that people who do so will be severely dealt with.

According to Simon Elstow, IAM's head of driver training, car insurance customers who plan to have a drink at the office party should plan alternative transport.
"Now is the time of festive fun and this often involves Christmas parties. If you're heading out for a few drinks, make sure you have planned your journey home," he said.

The IAM is urging drivers to not try to calculate how much they can drink and still be legally able to drive, as well as advising people that a heavy night drinking can leave them still over the limit the next morning.
