Car insurance: Drink drive limit to be lowered?

Monday, 15 March 2010

The legal drink drive limit could be reduced in an attempt to curb the number of alcohol-related road accidents.

Limits may be lowered to around a pint of beer for men and even less for women under the new proposals, which could also cut the number of car insurance claims stemming from accidents caused by drivers over the limit.

Transport secretary Lord Adonis confirmed that the government is waiting to receive a report from Sir Peter North QC on whether the current 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood should be cut to 50.

There is speculation that Sir Peter will call for a cut and also recommend even lower limits for novice, lorry and bus drivers, who could face a 20 milligram limit.

The report is also likely to tighten the law on "drug driving".

According to the Think! road safety campaign website, any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive.

It states that each person's tolerance to alcohol depends on a range of factors including weight, age, stress levels and whether they have eaten recently, concluding that the only safe option is not to drink alcohol at all if you plan to drive.
