Car insurance: Drivers 'should err on the side of caution'

Tuesday, 07 April 2009

Drivers who do not want to lose access to cheap car insurance should err on the side of caution when it comes to drinking and driving, it has been claimed.

Swiftcover issued this statement after it conducted research that showed 39 per cent of motorists in the UK thought the legal limit was the equivalent of one pint of beer.

The study also found drivers in the UK overestimate how much alcohol it is okay to consume before getting behind the wheel more than residents of any of the other countries surveyed.

A spokesman for Swiftcover said there needs to be more education on the issue.

He explained: "I don't think it is a case of people being reckless, it is more a case of them not knowing."

Motorists who are not sure about the drink-drive limit were urged to avoid alcohol altogether on occasions when they intend to take to the road.

Drivers who receive a conviction for drink driving may find some companies refuse to provide car insurance.
