Car insurance: Drivers could be caught out the morning after

Wednesday, 16 July 2008

Motorists deciding to drive the morning after a night out drinking could find that they invalidate their car insurance policies.

According to research from the Now Group, which surveyed 4,000 drivers, 51 per cent took to the road after a boozy evening, unaware that they may be over the limit.

It could be that this is a problem for motorists looking to preserve their car insurance no claims bonus, as a conviction could undo years of safe driving.

National road safety charity Brake's fundraising manager Katie Shephard commented that a personal breathalyser kit may be useful for some drivers.

"Most people don't even consider that after a night of moderate drinking they may still be over the limit to drive well into the next day," remarked the official.

Department for Transport figures recently released show that some 2,943 drivers were killed on British roads over the course of 2007.
