Car insurance: Drink drivers targeted in summer campaign

Friday, 07 July 2006

A recent campaign by the UK's Road Policing Unit has seen thousands of motorists stopped for drink driving over the summer months so far.

A total of 233 drivers were arrested for being over the limit in the last month alone, after police set up almost 200 roadside random test checkpoints to catch out drivers.

In total the police stopped and interacted with almost 5,000 motorists, administering 461 roadside breath tests.

The campaign is part of the police's initiative to increase awareness that drink driving is a year-round problem.

Superintendent Nikki Watson, head of the force's Road Policing Unit, said: "Everyone traditionally associates police drink drive crackdowns with the Christmas period.

"But it can be just as big a problem during the summer, with people attending barbecues, picnics and evenings at country pubs."

She said the police's attitude to drink driving remains "ruthlessly simple".

"We will remain relentless on drink driving all year round," Superintendent Watson explained.

"As far as we are concerned, there is no 'safe' limit to drink; if you are going to drive, our advice is not to drink at all."

Drivers are warned that anyone caught drink driving will have a criminal record, risk losing their job and face rocketing car insurance premiums.
