Motor insurance: Drink driving blitz begins

Thursday, 07 December 2006

The police are starting their annual festive boozing motorist blitz where they clamp down severely on middle-aged men, among others, who drink and then drive.

Christmas is one of the highest months for fatalities arising from drunk drivers and so the police will be breathalysing more drivers than ever before.

Some 9,000 motorists were caught in the act during 2005's festive period despite drink driving causing around 30,000 deaths on UK roads every year.

A spokesperson from the Association of Chief Police Officers said: "December is one of the highest months for both fatalities and collisions involving drunk drivers, while the number of deaths caused by drivers with illegal levels of alcohol has risen over the past few years.

"This is unacceptable and the police will not tolerate it."

Being tipsy on the road renders you a dangerous driver and subsequent accidents could harm your cheap car insurance premiums.

The police will also be targeting drivers whose driving is impaired by the use of drugs, numbers of whom are increasing, particularly among young people.

Extra officers will be on duty throughout the Christmas period.
