Motor insurance: Drink driving up this Christmas

Thursday, 28 December 2006

Despite epic anti drink driving campaigns by the police it appears that the number of people driving while drunk has gone up this Christmas, according to police reports.

A three-week crackdown on boozy motorists in the UK saw a total of 656 people being caught as over the limit or refusing to give a breath test to police.

This is up from last year's figure of 620 people during the same period.

Concerned neighbours and motorists have been influential in this figure with
142 people ringing Crimestoppers to report suspicious driving.

Chief Constable John Vine, who manages road policing, said: "In the midst of this festive season and with Hogmanay coming up I would urge anybody going out for a drink not to take the car but to arrange a lift home or order a taxi.

"It may cost you a few pounds more but that is better than costing somebody their life."

Being caught drink driving can have an adverse affect on your cheap car insurance premiums too.

One Scottish taxi driver was found to be over double the alcohol limit while driving on Boxing Day.
