Car insurance: Dangers of drink driving highlighted

Monday, 07 December 2009

The dangers of drink driving this Christmas have been highlighted by health and safety professionals in Kent, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

Data from Kent Police shows that 275 people were arrested for EBA (excess breath alcohol) during December 2008.

In addition, the proportion of drink related road deaths for the UK is one in six and driving at the legal limit means you are between two and five times more likely to crash.

Kent City Council cabinet member for highways Nick Chard said that any amount of alcohol affects people's ability to drive safely, slowing reactions and leading to increased stopping distance, poorer judgement of speed and distance and reducing field of vision.

"The simplicity of this message is key," Mr Chard said, "one drink really is too many if you're driving".

It was reported recently that the government has asked a legal expert to examine the case for lowering the legal alcohol limit for drivers and tightening laws on drug-driving.
