Drive safely in windy weather

Wednesday, 04 January 2012

Drivers across the UK have been urged to take care this week as winds in the UK threaten to blow away road safety. With a gust of 102 mph recorded in Edinburgh on Tuesday (January 3rd), road conditions could be treacherous.

Road charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered tips to drivers in the UK, urging them to take care on the roads to avoid having to make costly car insurance claims.

The charity says that the most effective way of staying safe is to plan a route which is likely to be clear of fallen trees, and not wide open to wind.

Other tips from the IAM include making sure other road users have plenty of space to drive safely in, and taking care to hold the wheel tight at all times, because a big gust can come at any time.

IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "I have seen a parked car moved by the wind.  Don’t underestimate how powerful it is and how it can affect you whilst in the car."
