Car insurance: Drivers face tougher penalties
Monday, 24 September 2007
Drivers who do not declare who was driving when a car has been clocked travelling over the speed limit are set to face tougher penalties under newly-introduced legislation.
Such motorists will now have six points placed on their licence - twice the current rate - in a move that is likely to adversely affect the chances of those convicted of the offence from getting the most competitive car insurance deals.
It is a move by the government which aims to crack down on drivers who state that they do not know who was behind the wheel in an attempt to flout the law.
Sheila Rainger of the RAC Foundation told the BBC that the move could lead to some honest drivers being caught out.
"Our concern is that it will cause hardship to that small number of motorists who genuinely do not know," she said.
The Burnley Express reports that ten new speed cameras are to be erected in the area in a bid to keep drivers under the limit.
