Car insurance: Drivers could be at risk of losing cheap cover
Monday, 03 August 2009
Experienced motorists could be at risk of losing access to cheap car insurance, if new research is anything to go by.
A study by Kia saw a group of long-time drivers re-sit their practical test and the manufacturer claimed it was shocked by the results.
Some 50 per cent of participants failed the challenge and, of those who were unsuccessful, half committed a serious error.
Kia pointed out one motorist narrowly missed a pedestrian who stepped into the road between two parked cars.
In light of the results of the experiment, the company has called for more to be done to improve driving standards in the UK.
Spokesperson Sue Mulcaster said the firm ensured it fitted its autos with a range of protective systems.
However, she stated: "Realistically, we hope that drivers won't have cause to test these safety functions and, by campaigning for higher driving standards, [we] aim to cut down the number of UK road accidents."
Meanwhile, motorists who take every precaution to avoid collisions may find they are able to build up a healthy no-claims discount on their car insurance.
