Car insurance: Drivers 'have key role in road safety'

Monday, 29 June 2009

Drivers have an important role to play in making Britain's roads safer and keeping down the number of traffic accidents and subsequent car insurance claims, it has been suggested.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists welcomed the fact the number of people killed and injured in collisions has fallen in the UK, but warned against complacency.

It added the country's leaders cannot be expected to do all the work on their own.

Director of policy and research Neil Greig said: "The challenge for the government is to provide a safe and modern road network and for motorists to take more responsibility for their safety by treating driving as a skill for life."

This comes after Department for Transport figures revealed traffic accident fatalities fell 14 per cent in 2008, compared with the previous year.

Currently, the UK is in sixth place in the world when it comes to road safety.

Meanwhile, if the number of serious crashes in the country fell, more people may find they had access to low cost motor insurance.
