Car insurance: Herts drivers' actions 'are foolish'

Wednesday, 09 July 2008

Drivers in Hertfordshire have been caught carrying out a number of unusual tasks when behind the wheel - such as playing a harmonica - actions that might have a negative impact on their car insurance premiums.

The Road Safety Unit at Herts county council carried out a check over the course of a month to discover if motorists are staying alert while driving, reports the Herts Advertiser.

Individuals were seen eating breakfast, using their mobile telephones, reading and putting their makeup on, officials said. Some even drove with a dog on their lap.

Executive member for highways, transport and rural affairs, county councillor Stuart Pile noted that these are irresponsible actions that ought to be stamped out.

He told the news source: "The crazy, dangerous antics recorded by our team are simply unbelievable - and many of them wouldn't be out of place on Police, Camera, Action."

Such moves are a "blatant disregard" for other road users, he added, something that is also becoming accepted.

Grampian police are to offer youngsters in the area a number of safety hints that could help them in the future, it was reported this week.
