Wednesday, 21 May 2008

Police officers in the Lancashire area are under an investigation after drivers were convicted by mistake for speeding over a sustained period of time.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPPC) has also found that staff did not process paperwork correctly and this led to the cancellation of tickets, reports the Chester Evening Leader.

As a result, two members of staff from the central processing unit and one camera operative have been charged with misconduct, the commission revealed.

Mistakes were made in these areas by Lancashire police between September 2006 and August 2007, the enquiry found.

Other staff members were also put under investigation but they were not charged as a result.

Commissioner for the IPPC Naseem Malik said that "concerns" over the work these people carried out has meant other convictions have to be changed.

A speed camera near to Bath was recently set on fire by angry drivers last week, the Bath Chronicle reported.

Motorists caught speeding may find that their car insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.
