Car insurance: Man receives driving ban after 'walking dog' from motor

Monday, 08 March 2010

A man has been banned from the roads after walking a dog while driving his car, increasing the potential risk of accidents resulting in a claim on motor insurance.

The motorist was driving at five miles per hour along a country lane with his lurcher running alongside the car - attached to a lead through the open window - when he was caught by police.

At a hearing at Consett Magistrates' Court, County Durham, prosecutor Sharon Lowrie said the driver was "hanging on to the dog's lead through the driver window, approaching a blind summit".

After pleading guilty to not being in proper control of a vehicle, the motorist was fined £66 and ordered to pay £43 costs, plus a legal surcharge of £15.

He was also given three penalty points on his licence. As he already had nine points, he was banned from driving for six months.

In a separate but similarly bizarre incident, a woman was banned from driving last year after being caught more than twice over the legal alcohol limit while riding a 2.4mph mobility scooter.
