Police in Dorset catalogued 30 driving offences in a single day while carrying out road safety checks. Among those caught was a 53-year-old woman driving to a garage to fix her faulty bonnet - with the bonnet itself wide open and almost completely obscuring her windscreen. Another driver was caught rolling a cigarette while steering the car with his elbows, while one motorist was reading from a clipboard across the steering wheel and a further six drivers were using mobile phones. Meanwhile, ten drivers were caught speeding and nine passengers were also given fixed penalty notices not wearing seatbelts. Ironically, officers were patrolling the roads on March 10th as part of a No Excuse campaign to reduce the risk of accidents potentially resulting in a claim on car insurance. Dorset road safety manager Robert Smith said: "Our partners in the police aren't having to look too hard to find examples of dangerous driving, from the bizarre to the truly terrifying." A recent YouGov survey of more than 2,000 motorists revealed 31 per cent had taken a call while driving, and 28 per cent had read text messages at the wheel. Posted by Noel Martin © Adfero Ltd
