Motor insurance holders 'at risk this winter'

Sunday, 07 November 2010

One in four motor insurance policyholders will put themselves at risk on the roads this winter, new research has revealed.

Around a quarter of drivers will go out in wintry conditions without doing anything to their cars beforehand, research from Manheim Auctions found.

Meanwhile, 60 per cent of car insurance holders only do the bare minimum to their car in the colder months, just topping up screen wash with anti-freeze, buying de-icer and carrying an ice-scraper.

"With winter fast approaching it’s so important for motorists to prepare their car ahead of the bad weather. We all need to take extra precautions when driving in icy, wintery conditions," said Craig Mailey, marketing director at Manheim.

"We should be used to the cold weather by now but you still see some motorists driving without fully clearing either their windscreen or their rear screen and it’s dangerous! "

Recently, Tyresafe advised motorists to change to all-weather tyres in order to reduce the risk of accidents in the cold weather.
