Car insurance: Motorists 'should be prepared for severe weather'

Half of UK motorists could be risking road accidents and subsequent car insurance claims by ignoring severe weather warnings, the Highways Agency has revealed.

According to the group, some 50 per cent of drivers would continue with a journey despite being advised otherwise and around a third would not carry out any checks on the vehicles before heading out.

However, some 92 per cent of motorists said they would look for information on travel conditions before hitting the road.

Director of network operations at the Highways Agency Derek Turner acknowledged some people had to travel regardless of weather.

But he added there were measures motorists could take to reduce their chances of having to make a motor insurance claim.

Mr Turner stated: "Drivers need to be prepared with a severe weather kit in their vehicles, carry out simple vehicle checks before they set out and plan their journeys."

Last month, the Highways Agency announced the speed limit on the hard shoulder of the M42 near Birmingham was being raised to 60 mph, following a successful test.
