Car insurance: Green drivers 'can get cheaper cover'

Friday, 06 February 2009

Motorists who adopt green habits behind the wheel may see the cost of their car insurance fall, it has been suggested.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), the kind of steps drivers take to reduce their impact on the environment could also relieve pressure on their pockets.

It explained people who decide to cut their carbon footprint by opting for a car with a smaller engine will generally find they qualify for low cost motor insurance.

Similarly, those drivers who try and limit their vehicle use are also likely to find their premiums are less expensive.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at Biba, said people with eco-friendly habits could get cheap deals without choosing a policy which is specifically aimed at green motorists.

He stated: "The green thing can sometimes be slightly misinterpreted and companies are using the green term to attract people with that particular conscience and awareness of green issues."

Biba represents the interests of the insurance industry in the UK.
