Motorists searching for cheap car insurance quotes could also save by purchasing an ultra-low carbon vehicle and receiving up to GBP5,000 from the Department of Transport (DfT) for doing so it has been announced.

From January next year, the government is to launch the Plug-in Car Grant and has pledged GBP30 million to the initiative.

The money will also be used to create a network of Plugged-in Places, which are areas where the vehicles can be recharged, and invested in supporting infrastructure.

Transport secretary Lord Andrew Adonis said car insurance customers must do their bit to minimise the impact of cars on the environment.

"Decarbonising transport isn't an aspiration - it's a reality," he stated.

Lord Andrew added that the steps taken by motorists to purchase more eco-friendly forms of transport will boost the country's attempts to meet its stringent emissions reduction targets.

According to figures from the DfT, traffic in the UK has grown by 85 per cent since 1980.ADNFCR-3010-ID-19639075-ADNFCR
