Travel insurance: Holidaymakers "worried about eco impact"
Wednesday, 19 September 2007
Although normally travellers will worry about whether they took out adequate travel insurance or forgot their toothbrushes, modern holidaymakers have even more on their plate, it seems.
An expert at one travel company says that green-conscious Brits are becoming ever more aware of the potentially harmful effects of their jollies on the environment, despite government moves to apply extra tax to air travel.
The spokesperson for responsibletravel.com claimed that ethical, or responsible tourism will eventually precipitate a "revolution" in the industry as a growing number of holidaymakers have this lodged in their minds.
"These holidays are for people concerned about the environmental impact of flying and who want to reduce their carbon emissions," she explained.
Recent research from The International Ecotourism Society found that 20 to 30 per cent of travellers are now aware of the need for responsible practices while travelling.
