Ensure electrical safety at home

Wednesday, 01 February 2012

Homeowners have been urged by a fire service to make sure that they are checking how safe their electrical equipment is, reducing the risk of fires in the home.

With Christmas out of the way, many people may have forgotten the warnings, such as that from Dorset Fire and Rescue about the dangers of Christmas lights, but home insurance claims could be risked all year round from fire hazards.

West Yorkshire Fire and Safety has now warned people of the dangers of faulty equipment.

Assistant chief fire officer Craig McIntosh, told H&V News: "Fire in the home can be devastating, but it is nearly always preventable. It is really important that people check their electrics are working properly and in good working order."

Top tips from the service included making sure that all electrics are switched off when not in use, only putting one plug in a socket, and making sure the correct fuses are used.
