Travel insurance: Cover 'is essential'

Tuesday, 07 July 2009

Holidaymakers need to take out travel insurance regardless of how long they are going away for, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of British Insurers, cover is a necessity not a luxury.

Spokesman Malcolm Tarling commented: "Even for short trips, the number one fear is getting ill or injured overseas - and travel insurance provides that protection which is extremely cheap for the cover it provides."

He added research shows an "alarming" number of people fail to purchase this type of policy.

This comes after Which? Holiday magazine reported some airlines are contravening an EU ruling by automatically adding extras like insurance when customers book their flights.

For some carriers, people have to untick a box to show they do not want to buy cover.

Holidaymakers who are travelling by air to reach their annual getaway destination this year may find a better deal on cheap travel insurance by purchasing it separately.
