Motor insurance: Cameras 'hidden' in Essex
Thursday, 22 May 2008
Essex drivers have suggested that the police in the county may be hiding speed cameras behind unmarked vehicles.
People from close to Westcliff in Essex have said that large trucks are being placed near to speed detector vans, meaning drivers have no warning of their presence, reports the Essex Echo.
One of the locals, Timothy Burr, argued that such devices should be used in a bid to improve road safety and claimed that they have been utilised in an effort to raise cash instead.
He told the publication: "That's why they painted them yellow - not to make money, but to slow people down. What's the point if people can't see the camera?"
Nishan Wijerante, spokesman for Essex police, responded and claimed that drivers are usually told in advance where cameras are positioned - they are not deliberately hidden.
An investigation was recently carried out in Lancashire after motorists were apparently given speeding fines in error.
Drivers caught speeding may find that their motor insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.
