The rising cost of scrap metal could have an inadvertent effect on
car insurance prices, as thieves are targeting exhaust systems to sell on the market.
Several motorists in Cheshire have been struck by the phenomenon, where thieves simply saw away at the exhausts and take the metal away to be sold.
Drivers in the Alderley Edge, Nantwich and Middlewich areas of Cheshire have all fallen victim to the scam.
Detective sergeant Dan Ackerley, head of Cheshire Police Eastern Area's vehicle crime unit, said that car insurance holders who drive 4x4s need to be especially vigilant.
"These thieves are getting under the vehicles and simply sawing sections of the exhaust away. They are particularly keen on 4x4s - probably because they are higher off the ground, giving more space for the thief to work," he stated.
There is a particular thirst for catalytic convertors, which can command fees as high as ?150 each from scrap metal merchants.
