Transport ministers from across the EU have agreed a series of measures to help prevent further disruptions to air travel from the volcanic ash which recently closed air spaces across the continent.
One of the key proposals is to establish a single regulator which will be responsible for Europe's air space and be able to offer a fast and coherent response to crises like the one recently experienced.
Also included in the initiative are plans which will allow national governments to compensate airlines which have been affected by such occurrences.
Siim Kallas, the European transport commissioner, said after the meeting that it is important a system is put in place which means
travel insurance customers do not have to experience such disruption and chaos again.
"This is going to continue to happen. It might be next week. It might be in 20 years. But it will happen again; and volcanoes do not obey rules," he stated.
