Car insurance: Fiat cash in as drivers downsize

Wednesday, 08 October 2008

The number of motor insurance policies being taken out for Fiat vehicles could be on the rise, despite poor overall industry sales last month.

Figures released by the manufacturer showed it had its best result in the UK for four years, shifting some 9,818 units in September.

This comes after the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders announced sales for the industry as a whole has fallen by 21.2 per cent, in comparison with the same month last year.

Conversely, the number of Fiat models purchased rose by 56.5 per cent, giving the company a three per cent market share.

Managing director Andrew Humberstone said: "There has been a shift in consumer buying behaviour and people are choosing to downsize into the small car sector - an area which is clearly one of our primary strengths."

Meanwhile, Fiat announced last month an eco-friendly version of the Panda had arrived in showrooms across the UK.
