Car insurance: Fiat wins technology award

Saturday, 04 April 2009

Motorists who make a conscious effort to only take out car insurance policies for the most environmentally-friendly models on the market may welcome news of a green innovation from Fiat has won an accolade.

The manufacturer's eco:Drive system, designed to help drivers reduce their CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, came top in the digital technology category at the MediaGuardian Innovation Awards.

Unveiled at the Paris motor show in 2008, the technology takes the form of a USB stick that is plugged into a vehicle's dashboard.

It records details of how a car is driven and this can be uploaded onto a computer.

Users are then offered advice on how changing their habits behind the wheel could improve efficiency.

Claudio Annicchiarico, head of digital Fiat UK, commented: "It's the first time that an automotive brand has launched an interactive technology that helps its customers improve their style of driving in order to help preserve the environment."

People buying an eco-friendly car may find they can secure low cost motor insurance online.
