Car insurance customers who decide to purchase a faster and sportier car than the standard version of the same model could face paying twice as much to insure it.

Research by swiftcover.com found that a 30-year-old man with five years no-claims discount would face costs of £1,000 to cover a VW Golf GTi, while the normal Golf S would cost less than half that.

The study discovered that motorists could save on average £513 on their car insurance cover if they purchased standard models as opposed to overtly sporty ones.

Tina Shortle, our marketing director, said that motorists should not let their hearts rule their heads when it comes to buying a new car.

"It might be great to own the latest hot-hatch, but even motorists with perfect driving histories are paying over the odds for cars with a few more brake horsepower and spoilers to make them look sporty," she added.
