Travel insurance: Flight costs to rise as air taxes increased
Tuesday, 08 August 2006
Taxes on flights should be raised to reflect their impact on the environment, claims a committee of MPs.
The new report raises concerns that the Department for Transport (DfT) has failed to take action to cut emissions within the aviation industry and that the only way of offsetting environmental damage is to raise the cost of flights.
Committee chairman Tim Yeo explained: "Unless the DfT raises its game, transport will go on rising so fast - and particularly aircraft - that almost anything else we do is going to be really useless."
However, there are concerns that increasing flight taxes could undermine many poorer households and discourage them from travelling overseas.
"What we need is a system which effectively taxes inefficient airlines or taxes those airlines that don't invest in the more modern aeroplanes," commented transport minister Stephen Ladyman.
Whether holidaymakers are planning to travel within the UK or overseas, they are encouraged to make sure they have sufficient travel insurance to help protect against any unforeseen events including lost belongings, unexpected medical treatment or cancellation.
