Car insurance: Foreign drivers escaping speeding punishment

Wednesday, 24 October 2007

A high number of motorists in Scotland have walked away from speeding punishments because their vehicles have been registered abroad, it has been revealed.

Just under 1,000 drivers since 2005 have escaped punishment in the Grampian region because they are not residents in the UK, reports the Press and Journal.

Grampian Police stated that they have been unable to issue fines or make take other action - something that could have an impact on car insurance - because of the lack of information available between European Union countries.

Member of the Scottish Parliament Christine Graham stated that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) should make changes so the relevant people can be caught.

"Steps should be taken by the DVLA and other relevant authorities to pursue all speeding drivers, regardless of where they come from, to ensure they are penalised and deterred from placing the lives of others at risk," she commented to the paper.

Yesterday it was reported that a man was caught speeding at 122mph near to Falkirk.
