British people think that fuel duty is the most unfair tax, according to a new survey.

The revelation comes just days after a planned increase in fuel duty was delayed at the budget.

The poll of MSN Money users deemed fuel duty – a major constituent of the ever-rising cost of motoring – the most unfair of all taxes, followed by council tax and inheritance tax.

Vehicle excise duty – better known as road tax – was rated fourth, illustrating just how angry motorists are at the levels of taxation imposed upon them.

Simon Ward of MSN Money said "With fuel prices heading for another record high, it's perhaps not surprising that fuel duty was the popular choice as the most unfair tax."

Another recent poll, from Populus and AA, found that the soaring cost of motoring is causing more than a third (38 per cent) of drivers to use their cars less.

High levels of unavoidable taxation increase the pressure on people to keep other costs as low as possible. Going online to get a quick quote for cheap car insurance is one way you can bring down the price of motoring.
