Car insurance customers are now spending more for a litre of fuel than in the past, new research has indicated.

The average price for a litre of diesel reached more than £1.33 on January 27th, which set a new record high, surpassing the previous record of 133.25p per litre, According to motoring group the AA.

In addition, petrol expenses jumped for motor insurance customers during January, with the price per litre costing almost £1.29.

Edmund King, the AA's president, said: "Average petrol prices wobbled earlier this week, dipping for the first time since the first week of September before continuing to go. We understand that prices remain volatile, but hope that retailers will pass on savings when they can."

The company is now appealing to the chancellor for the planned fuel duty rise to be frozen and replaced with a fuel price stabiliser.

Furthermore, the AA claims the cost of wholesale fuel has fallen from 41p to 39p.
