Car insurance: Garages 'should sign up to code'

Thursday, 02 July 2009

People who are worried they will end up throwing away the money they saved by buying cheap car insurance if they pick the wrong garage at servicing time may welcome a call for more businesses to demonstrate their commitment to good customer service.

The Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (Vosa) has voiced support for the Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair.

Firms that sign up to this initiative agree to abide by a number guiding principles, including providing drivers with open and transparent pricing.

Vosa said companies authorised to give out MOT certificates have already met the criteria it puts in place.

However, it pointed out the latest project allows repair centres to show they are committed to offering customers the best possible service.

Chief operating officer Alex Fiddes stated: "We would encourage MOT garages to sign up to industry codes and seek to improve standards for motorists."

Meanwhile, auto owners who have already found a mechanic they trust and who charges low prices may find they can save even more money by searching for the cheapest online car insurance at renewal time.
