Car insurance: Government plans for reduced speeds

Friday, 16 May 2008

Government proposals have suggested that the speed limits on many urban roads could be cut to 20mph to lower the number of casualties seen on them.

And new changing signs could be added to certain locations that alter when children are arriving at and leaving school, reports the Times.

The fresh government plans are to cover the next ten years and will probably have definitive targets included.

If the plans go ahead, then cameras will be initiated to capture drivers that are speeding in such residential areas.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick told the publication that actual targets are a good way to ensure that the nature of the roads are improved.

"We could reduce crashes still further, with the help of more 20mph zones, especially in residential neighbourhoods and other areas where there are vulnerable road users," he commented.

Last month, the Conservatives also called for the creation of more 20mph limits in residential areas.

Drivers breaking the speed limit may find that their car insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.
