Car insurance: Greece 'most dangerous' for British drivers

Monday, 07 August 2006

Greece has been named as the most dangerous destination for British drivers, according to a new survey.

Research from the RAC Foundation as part of National Motorway Month concluded that death rates on Greek roads are five times high than in the UK. However, Brits are reminded that using European motorways could help to reduce potential holiday collisions, as they tend to be safer than normal main roads.

Just eight per cent of fatal accidents occur on motorways in Spain and Portugal and are actually safer than those in the UK, according to fatality rates.

Holidaymakers planning to travel abroad are being reminded to double check that their car insurance policy covers overseas driving. Motorists are also urged to make sure they are familiar with different roadsides and fully prepared before leaving UK shores otherwise they could find car insurance premiums rising if involved in an expensive collision.

Edmund King, executive director of the RAC Foundation, said "High holiday spirits and poor local knowledge can turn a drive to the beach into a trip to A&E."

"British motorists driving abroad need to expect the unexpected at all times if they want to bring home holiday photos rather than X-rays," he added.
