Greener technology 'will benefit motor insurance policyholders'

Thursday, 20 January 2011

All motor insurance policyholders are likely to benefit from greener vehicle technology over the coming years, according to one expert.

Dr Ben Lane from said more people will begin driving greener cars over the next few years, but it will not just be a case of everyone buying an electric vehicle.

He said: "I think what will happen is that the technology that is already happening will make its way to conventional vehicles.

"Already a lot of petrol and diesel vehicles have 'stop-start' which is the first step towards being a hybrid. We will certainly see more hybrids and more electrics."

Dr Lane added that the technologies will make hybrid vehicles cheaper and conventional vehicles cleaner.

From January 4th, certain vehicles have been exempt from the Congestion Charge in London, due to changes in the legislation.

Car insurance policyholders who have a vehicle which emits less than 100g/km of CO2 and meets Euro 5 standards for air quality will not have to pay the £10 daily fee.
