Travel insurance: More Brits 'heading abroad'
Thursday, 18 October 2007
The UK's love affair with overseas travel is causing even more British tourists to head to foreign shores than ever before, new government figures reveal.
Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that Brits took a total of 69.6 million trips abroad in the 12 months to August 2007 compared to 68.6 million in the 12 months before. This represents an increase of 1.5 per cent and is the highest figure on record.
Europe continued to be the most popular destination for British travellers with some 54.8 million trips being taken within the continent. But there was also a marked increase in the number of trips to more far flung destinations.
Indeed, there was a seven per cent increase in the number of visits to destinations outside Europe and the US, suggesting British tourists are becoming more adventurous.
Recently, The Thrifty Scot stated that backpackers ought to take out adequate travel insurance before they set off on their travels abroad, in case any accidents occur.
