Car insurance: Tougher theory tests on way

Wednesday, 05 September 2007

A tougher theory section of the UK driving test came into effect on Monday, making candidates having to sit for more questions and placing a higher pass score.

Instead of having to get 30 out of 35 questions correctly, candidates will now have to answer 43 of 50 multiple questions right, a very slight increase in percentage.

According to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) the new tests should allow for testing candidates on a wider range of topics than before.

New questions will require greater knowledge on illegal drugs and how long they can stay in the bloodstream, as well as minutiae such as what a driver should do when he is parked and waiting for a passenger.

The new test has been estimated to take just three minutes short of an hour to complete, compared to the previous 40 minutes.

It was revised after growing concerns of a lack of knowledge from young drivers, particularly as statistics showed an increasing problem in the group with drink and drug driving, and increasing premiums in car insurance due to accidents.

The questions used in the test will be selected from a total of 1,300, which are available to candidates to revise with.
