Car insurance: Number plate sells for over £100,000
Tuesday, 08 December 2009
A car insurance customer with a penchant for unusual number plates shelled out a whopping £100,216 for the registration 6 O at the DVLA Personalised Registrations' Christmas auction.
Ghanim al-Hadaifi, 24, splashed the cash during the final day of the auction staged at Tankersley Manor Hotel, near Barnsley.
Mr al-Hadaifi, a member of the Qatar diplomatic family living in London, has spent more than £246,000 on just three number plates this year alone.
He bought 4 O from the DVLA summer auction for £63,000 and 5 O from the agency's autumn event for £83,000, though the latter was a gift for the Qatari ruling family.
A spokesman for Mr al-Hadaifi said: "Money is not really an issue, he just wants the best registrations he can have for his cars".
However the 6 O is not the highest selling registration ever. In March of this year the registration 1 D smashed all records when it was sold for £352,000.
Every year the DVLA holds around six auctions of personalised registrations throughout the UK.
