Travel insurance: High-speed rail 'beneficial'

High-speed rail capabilities usually encourage travellers to opt for train travel, one organisation has suggested this week.

The Association of Train Operating Companies (Atoc) stated that if lessons from continental Europe are learnt and rail options are enhanced, then passengers may be dissuaded from using airlines.

But media relations manager at the Atoc Hassard Stacpool added that such developments are merely "part of the solution" and also that the government could help the sector in the UK.

He commented: "A lot of people within the industry think that it is important that we do build a high-speed line as far as the Midlands to help ease capacity."

At present, the UK lingers behind other countries that have adopted high-speed trains such as Japan, France and Germany, figures from the Commission for Integrated Transport highlighted.

The organisation also pondered that the mode of transport can ultimately reduce demand on the roads.

Travellers should ensure that they have an adequate travel insurance plan in place before embarking on journeys.
