Travel insurance: Brits 'splash the cash' on holiday

Holidaymakers from the UK part with more than USD69 billion (GBP43 billion) each year on trips abroad, making them the third highest spending tourists in the world.

Research from travel website Skyscanner found that Germans spend USD90 billion a year on breaks, putting them in first place ahead of Americans, who spend just under USD80 billion.

The most popular spot for British travel insurance customers is Spain, with figures from the company showing that 'cheap flights to Malaga' was the most searched for travel term in January.

Barry Smith, from Skyscanner, said the next 12 months will be an important time for the travel industry.

"It will be very interesting to see how tourist spending changes since the downturn," he commented.

While Brits, Germans and Americans continue to splash the cash while on foreign soil, Japanese tourists reigned in their spending to USD27.9 in 2009, which is nearly eight per cent less than in 2008ADNFCR-3010-ID-19628428-ADNFCR
